A contemporary classic of Australian architecture and design
Location
Set in New South Wales’s majestic Kangaroo Valley: only one of seven enclosed valleys in the world - Ooralba is a sprawling and luxurious country estate that celebrates the spectacular beauty and awe-inspiring power of nature. Nestled in the shadows of ancient towering stone monoliths, eucalyptus trees and the stringy barks of Morton National Park, you will see mesmerising waterfalls trickle down sandstone escarpments. This idyllic scene is only further enhanced by a striking contemporary homestead, the heart of Ooralba. It’s here where you can take in the sunlight tracking over dramatic ochre-red ridges, the bristling sounds of native bushland in the breeze, and the sweeping South Coast vistas from Ooralba's expansive timber decks. Our 228 acre estate includes dreamy gardens as well as a kitchen produce garden planted with fresh herbs, orchards full of citrus fruit and macadamia nuts, an olive grove, free range chickens and paddocks for grazing the Estate's cattle.
The Homestead
A contemporary classic of Australian architecture and design, Ooralba is a modern paradise.
Vaulted ceilings, skylights and frameless glass windows bring a sense of lightness and space into this large country homestead. Reimagined by interior designer Nic Graham; the artwork and Australian craftsmanship combine with fresh luxury and design technologies to create a relaxing retreat. Furniture and lighting are contemporary by design, accentuating the pared back and elegant atmosphere of Ooralba. A curated art collection featuring predominantly Australian artists lines the walls of the Homestead while the generous dining area opens onto a chef’s kitchen, making it an ideal setting for casual dining and memorable entertaining.
The Gardens
The tranquil beauty of Ooralba’s gardens are gradually revealed upon arrival, with claret ash trees tall like columns lining the driveway. Australian landscape designer Hugh Main of Spirit Level Designs has created the Estate’s award-winning landscapes, instilling an ambience of contemplative serenity complementing beautifully with the rugged terrain of Morton National Park.
Bright clouds against a cobalt sky above have inspired the organic shapes in the shape of Ooralba's incredible Amoeba Garden. The interplay of scale, shape and texture have also been influenced by other iconic gardens further afield: Nicole De Vesian’s Le Louvre in the South of France, and the striking, graphic landscapes of Spanish designer Fernando Caruncho, as well as the calm precision of Japanese Zen gardens. The call of the Australian bush isn’t too far away however, with native plants featured in our compositions with the muted tonal palette of soft grey and silver coupled with deep green.
The bountiful Kitchen Garden is also a real highlight of the Ooralba experience. Uniform lines of fragrant herbs, fruit and vegetables provide the seasonal, garden-fresh produce for meals enjoyed by guests during their stay. It offers an interesting counterpoint to the whimsical, dreamscape of the Amoeba Garden to appreciate the practical, down-to-earth rewards of considered planting, with both our gardens nurturing the mind, body and spirit in a way that only nature can.
